There are a lot of different growing mediums, they are separated in three major categories which are soil, soil-less and hydroponic.

The question is what growing medium is the best for growing cannabis?

Well, all those growing mediums provide good results with pros and cons which we will discuss in the following sections :)

tldr: if you are a rookie, lightmix soil is the best and most simple solution, even experienced growers use it.

Soil

Soil

If you wanna keep it simple, soil is for you! This growing medium allows you to grow naturally and is great for beginners because mistakes can be repaired more easily than in other growing medium.

We recommend starting with lightmix, also called potting mix and adding your nutrients separately.

Composting or living-soil is a more advanced way of growing organically in soil(more on that soon :)).

⚠ Caution: do NOT use soils with slow release nutrients, they are not formulated for cannabis.

Soilless

Soilless

Soilless growing refers to a process of growing without using soil, you are responsible for giving water solution containing nutrients and pH levels adjustment from start to finish; making soilless growing a bit more difficult for beginners.

Instead of soil with dust you will find mixed soilless also called inert growing medium which contain coco, peat and vermiculite, but it can also be used as a stand-alone medium for potted plants. Because of its inert properties a soilless medium need to get nutrients and control pH from start and forget about organic grow.

Rockwool is a soilless medium too, it's not only for construction ;) but mostly used for hydroponics mediums. The good thing with soiless medium is that encourage maximum aeration and root exposure to the nutrients that involve your plant will be bigger and will grow faster than in soil, if well executed.

If you wanna try soilless medium we suggest you to start with mixed soilless which contain coco because of its good water retention and its renewable.

Hydroponic

Hydroponic

Sure, you've probably heard about this before, thinking it's just good quality, but it's more than that. This culture has become popular due to its fast and impressive results, offering full control over all parameters. You'll need some knowledge about pH control, hydroponic nutrients, and a special setup, which can be challenging for beginners, but it's doable.
In hydroponics, there are two main types of systems:

  • Without a solid growing medium: Plant roots are directly in a nutrient-rich water solution with special oxygenation.
  • With a growing medium: Uses materials like rockwool, clay pebbles, or perlite with setups for watering, like drippers or bubblers.

You can combine these systems, such as growing plants in clay pebbles suspended in a tank with roots in a water solution. Be aware that hydroponic setups can be expensive.
Growing this way is an advanced step, and many have tried with mixed results. Just give it a try; experience makes all the difference.
